The Metroid franchise, together with Castlevania, popularized the subgenre of side-scrolling action adventure games known as “Metroidvania”. In this science fiction action adventure, you are Samus Aran, bounty hunter (and one of the first female lead characters to appear in a hit game). You protect the galaxy from the Space Pirates and others who would attempt to harness the power of creatures known as Metroids for nefarious purposes. The game progresses as you explore various areas of a planet, slashing through space monsters and discovering hidden treasures that enhance your abilities, and ultimately take on the main boss (such as Mother Brain).
