For the first time, Sony did not popularize a new game format with its latest Playstation console. (For the uninitiated, PS1 did it with CD-based gaming, PS2 led the charge with DVD, PSP did it with UMD, and PS3 was the first console to support Blu-ray.)

Instead, the PS4 competed on customer experience. By passing on DRM restrictions, embracing indie game developers, and raising the performance bar to new heights, Sony showed it was in tune with customer needs and was rewarded with huge sales numbers—The PS4 became the second-best-selling home gaming console of all time (just behind the PS2).
