Donkey Kong has become one of Nintendo’s most iconic franchises. The Donkey Kong character made his debut in a 1981 arcade game created by Shigeru Miyamoto in which Donkey Kong throws barrels at a carpenter, later known as Mario, who attempts to rescue his lady friend. The game was a hit. Since then, Donkey Kong has gotten an extreme makeover, now acting as protagonist of his own story, with the help of his family and friends. Donkey Kong still throws a mean barrel, but now he aims at the bad guys.

We love Donkey Kong for its brilliant level designs, art direction, and marvelous music. (Listen to the underwater levels in Donkey Kong Country and tell me that doesn’t melt your inner-child’s little heart.)
